OVERWATCH - WHAT HERO TO PLAY AND HOW TO PLAY IT - DEFENSE CHAMPIONS PT.1 - BASTION & WIDOWMAKER (TOP 2 PICKS GUIDE)
BRIEF INTRO OF OUR BASIC OVERWATCH GUIDES SO FAR
Myboosting's Overwatch boost team has been preparing a series of articles dedicated to exploring and mastering each role and hero in the game.
So far you can read the following champion previews:
DEFENSE ROLE IMPORTANCE
The defense role currently consists of 6 unique characters, each with its own unique purpose and playstyle. The defense heroes are pretty balanced and the competition in this role is really tight in our eyes. Although the name of is "defense" most of the heroes can be quite useful as attackers also. However for the purposes of this article we have considered to put the 2 champions that step above the rest when it comes to defending an objective, and securing an area control.
NUMBER 1 OVERWATCH DEFENSE HERO
Difficulty - low-mid
Our Overwatch boost team top spot goes to Bastion - the robot - tank. In our point of view this character is the defenition of a defender. His unique skillset allows him to secure large areas of the map with ease. His damage out-put is the highest in the game and he is basicly not afraid of anyone. His little imperfections are easily avoidable when played by an experiensed player. There is no other hero in the game that can provide so much control over areas and solo defense potential over an objective.
Strengths - Massive damage output, Extremely good autoattacking, Area control, Tanky - almost unkillable in certain positions, Provides 100% certainty that the enemies will be punished if they try to pass a path that he is looking for.
Weaknesses - Low mobility, Brief delay on his transformations that make him vultarable, Needs to find the right spot to position, Can be avoided if not situated properly.
RECON - In Recon mode, Bastion is fully mobile, outfitted with a submachine gun that fires steady bursts of bullets at medium range.
CONFIGURATION: SENTRY - In Sentry mode, Bastion is a stationary powerhouse protected by a forward-facing shield and equipped with a gatling gun capable of unleashing a hail of bullets. The gun's aim can be "walked" across multiple targets, dealing devastating damage at short to medium range.
RECONFIGURE - Bastion transforms between its two primary combat modes to adapt to battlefield conditions.
SELF-REPAIR - Bastion restores its health; it cannot move or fire weapons while the repair process is in effect.
CONFIGURATION: TANK ( ultimate )- In Tank mode, Bastion extends wheeled treads and a powerful long-range cannon. The cannon’s explosive shells demolish targets in a wide blast radius, but Bastion can only remain in this mode for a limited time
RECONFIGURE - Left shift
SELF-REPAIR - E
CONFIGURATION: TANK - Q
How to play Bastion
He is not a hard to play hero. His skillset basicly tells you what you want to do with him - get to a safe spot and get to sentry form. Once you do that you are extremely tanky - adding a 1000 hp shield and getting his machine gun out which provides insane amout of damage and seemingly infinite ammo (200). By getting your safe to a location that you know is going to be fired with action you secure yourself a line of sight where the enemies will be passing by. Once they do you simply start shooting at them. Your shield gives you the safety to do so and the damage output that the machinegun has will make your opponents think twice to peak and try to focus you.
As a highly potent carry hero, Bastion is usually in the focus of the enemies. You are always one of the main targets that need to be killed. Because you are quite strong against anyone that wants to try to kill you from your line of sight, the best way to kill a good Basion is to flank him and get him from the sides or the back. The champions that are good at doing so and that you need to always keep track of are - Tracer, Reaper and Genji. However another one of the tanks gives you quite the headache when you are against him - Reinhardt. His dash in ability can get you ou of your sentry form. You do not want to fight too much when you are in your basic Recon form. You are not very mobile, so getting out of bad situations is almost impossible. When you are in Sentry form you are much safer and stronger. With this being said, dont always stay in Sentry form. Repositioning is important for Bastion also. The areas of action change constantly in the game and you want to be at the next point of contest before the enemies arrive. Dont rush it though, because that way you might miss on helping your team protect the area before that.
A seemingly rough situations can be solved by Bastion single-handedly. If your enemies are trying to face you from your line of sight they are doing a big mystake. This is one thing that you want to look for when you are positioning yourself - the least flanking places there are, the better you will do in the game. You have a self-heal ability that allows you to regenerate when the action is over and to find a better spot for your next shooting location.
Your ultimate litterary transforms you into a Tank. You get a high damage, long-range cannon. The weapon is simular to Pharah's basic attacks - only 10x better :D. While you are in your tank form you can move, which is a plus, but can also get you into tricky situations also. Remember that your number one priority when playing Bastion is to position properly. While in tank form you do not have the extra 1000 hp shield, which significatly decreases your survival potential. Sometimes it's better to relax in Sentry form, then to transform into tank. In cases where your Area of effect will be more effician - use your ultiamte and wreck your enemies.
Counters to Bastion - Tracer, Reaper, Genji, Reinhardt, (also Hanzo ult, Roadhog hook and Junkrat ult)
If your team is lacking that defense objective control power - Bastion is your best choice. He is not bad as attacker, especially when you are escorting the payload, but his true strength shines as an objective defender. He is not your every game pick, but in some cases he is certainly the right one.

Let's move on to OUR NUMBER 2
Difficulty - mid-high
Our Ovw boosting team really has a weakness for snipers. That is maybe on of the main reasons why she gets our number 2 Defense champion spot. Personally I come from a background of CoD, CS and TF2 and in all these games i enjoyed playing snipers the most. Widowmaker is a good representative of this class, but she has some skills that are not implemented in other games. However the basics are the same - you are a long range, high damage, hard to aim champion with a relatively low mobility. If you like how that sounds well thats your hero :).
Strengths - Best long range killing potential in the game, Extremely annoying to play against, Dominant in large opened spaces, Able to get to sneaky/high places and stay undetected.
Weaknesses - Squishy, Needs really good aim, Needs really good positioning and constant repositioning, Struggles in 1v1s on short range, Not that good in large fights if not in the backline, Usually gets focused fast by the enemy team.
WIDOW'S KISS - Widowmaker's versatile sniper rifle is ideal for scope-aimed shots at distant targets. Should targets close to medium range, the rifle can also be fired in fully-automatic mode.
GRAPPLING HOOK - Widowmaker launches a grappling hook towards the location she’s aiming at – when the hook connects with a scalable surface, she’s quickly drawn towards it, allowing her to expand her view of the battlefield and evade or flank targets.
VENOM MINE - Widowmaker adheres a swiftly-arming venom mine to nearly any surface. When a target wanders within range of the mine’s motion trigger, it explodes, delivering poison gas to any enemies in the vicinity.
INFRA-SIGHT (ultimate) - Widowmaker's recon visor allows her to see the heat signatures of her targets through walls and objects for a moderate amount of time. This enhanced vision is shared with her allies.
GRAPPLING HOOK - Left shift
VENOM MINE - E
INFRA-SIGHT - Q
How to play Widowmaker
First of all lets point out the obvious - Widowmaker is not a champion for every player. No, you don't need to be able to hold your breath for long, but you most definitely need to have good aim and good movement/positioning. Personally I would rate her as one of the hardest to play champions if you want to make real impact on the game. If you want to do avarage damage, you can miss a few more shots that necessary.
Second - you need to know the maps and you need to know the locations where you will be safe (at least for a period of time). After your place is compromised be sure that someone will focus that direction and head straight for you after his respawn. Champions like Tracer, Reaper can make your life really miserable if you are not relocating yourself. So camping one spot for a really long time is not an option that you want to choose. Always look for your secondary location and once you feel like someone is on to you, go for the next spot. That way you will give yourself some breathing room and better chances to attack the enemies for longer periods. And that is really what you need. To feel safe and to have time and long range to shoot at people. Your sniper damage is quite high and you can kill most champions with 1/2 shots if accurate.
Third - secure your location. You have three abilities that can help you do that.
- Your venom mine - you can put it on the most common ways to your location. It's not a 100-0 hp damage ability, but it can give you an edge when the 1v1 starts.
- Grapling hook - use it to escape a bad situation whenever you need to, look for your options before the enemies actually appear. That way you will have a better chance of escaping and eventually winning the invasion.
- Infra-sight - your ultimate is really amazing, and it is exactly what a sniper would want. It helps not only you, but your whole team. Use your ult almost on cooldown so that you know what is happening on the map and arround you. This way you can have a better feeling of where the danger might come from and most importantly better chance to land the killing blow first.
Four - remember not to get in the middle of the fights, avoid situations like that as much as possible.
Your main purpose is not to kill the whole enemy team. You are there to make the push / defense easier for your team. You will usually land a hit on 1 - 2 - 3 people while they advance. The more the better ofc. Your team is the one that needs to do the heavy lifting when a fight escalates around an objective. Your target is simple - stay out of danger and hit as many as you want. You usually dont want to be the one that is doing the capturing/ or the direct objective defending because this leaves you vulnarable to enemy fire. Your role is to carry your team indirectly.
Counters to Widowmaker- Reinhardt, Hanzo, Reaper, Genji, Tracer, Winston
Avoid the straight up 1v1s as much as you can. It's not that you are unable to win them, it's just the fact that you shine brightest when you outrange your opponents. This character is fitting for almost every map and every teamcomposition, but I would recommend thinking of other picks in certain scenarios. Although she can give great damage output a really tanky enemy team is hard to be handled by Widowmaker. Also if you dont feel that any spot is safe for you, because the enemies have a lot of flanking and diving potential you should reconsider your pick.
